Big Win at the Key

Seattle University's men's basketball team has arrived at the big time. On New Year's night the Redhawks were back at KeyArena after a 29-year absence and came away with a 49-39 victory over Loyola Marymount. The televised return to Division I play was cheered on by an enthusiastic group of nearly 5,000 students, faculty, staff, friends and alumni. The Associated Press hailed the victory a "perfect" return to D-I.

World As Our Classroom

Seattle University's Education Abroad is among the top programs of its kind in the nation, according to the latest Open Doors report by the Institute of International Education. In the report, SU made three of the lists for "Top 40 Institutions," ranking 14th for number of students studying abroad in the Masters Carnegie category and 13th for short-term abroad programs. SU made the top 40 for overall participation by undergraduates.

Spreading Cheer

Good wishes and reflections were in abundance as many alumni, their friends and families turned out for the annual Alumni and President's Club Advent Mass and Christmas Reception on Dec. 14 at the Chapel of St. Ignatius. The festive event began with a Mass presided over by President Stephen Sundborg, S.J., and followed with a reception at Paccar Atrium.

Seattle University has launched a new publication—an online version of Seattle University Magazine. A complement to the quarterly print version, Seattle University Magazine online provides a handy place for alumni and friends of the university to find the strong writing, storytelling and photography that make the print version a must-read. The online edition offers special "web extra" articles and features, such as photo slideshows, plus more opportunities to bolster community connections.

The Band Plays On...

The Band Plays On...

The music and crowd were hoppin' as Seattle University's Jazz Band, featuring students and staff, recently played its annual fall concert at Pigott Auditorium. The ensemble, led by Seattle jazz legend Clarence Acox—who is at the helm of Garfield High School's long-running and award-winning jazz program—performed a lively set that included "I'm in the Mood for Swing," "Sugar Rum Cherry," "Winter Wonderland" and "This Masquerade."
